Balanced Rock, Colorado

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Wisconsin - Green Bay

Location: 38o 51' 53" N, 104o 53' 51" W.

Balanced Rock is a famous landmark in Garden of the Gods near Colorado Springs, Colorado. Weathering of weak layers has undermined the rock. Seen end-on, from this angle, it looks like the rock might fall any day. But viewed from the side, the rock is actually quite long and connected to the base by a substantial rib of rock. It won't topple easily.
