Point Sur, California

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Wisconsin - Green Bay

Point Sur, California, south of Monterey, was once a small island. Since the island shields the coast behind it and creates a quiet spot, sand accumulates in the calmer water. Eventually the sand forms a continuous strip, called a tombolo, linking the island to the shore.
