Wave-Cut Arch, Lake Superior

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Wisconsin - Green Bay

Occasionally waves attacking a narrow headland break through to create an arch. This arch is not on a seacoast, however, but in Lake Superior. It is located in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan. The rock is soft yellowish sandstone of late Precambrian age, about 700 million years.
