Plane-Polarized Light

Crossed Polarizers

A plane-polarized view of stilpnomelane. Although similar in many ways to biotite, it lacks mottling and is never greenish in color.

The same field in crossed polarizers. The dark colors are not anomalous interference colors but are due to the very dark brown color of much of the stilpnomelane.
