Pergamum:  The Asklepion  The Sacred Way, leading from Pergamum:  to the Asklepion.  This was a sort of health resort on the outskirts of Pergamum: . It involved a large complex of buildings including a theatre, several temples, a hospital and so on. The hill in background is the Acropolis of Pergamum: , on which the center of the town was built.

Pergamum:  General views of the fortifications.  Pergamum:  was huge, with three city walls. We only saw the upper acropolis, where the palaces and temples were. There is a whole lower half of the city that we never even got to.

Pergamum: . General views of the fortifications. The pictures only hint at what a wonderful scene this was. Looking west, we could see the Aegean; looking inland, we could see mountains with snow in the distance. Dark clouds were skimming by just overhead and everything was lit by mellow winter sunlight.

Pergamum: : Ruins of the library, once one of the largest in the world, with 250,000 books.   The Egyptians feared that this library would become greater than theirs at Alexandria, and to prevent this they outlawed the exporting of papyrus, at that time the only known writing material (paper wasn't invented yet). The librarians replied by developing a new type of paper: parchment. The word 'parchment' itself comes from the name 'Pergamum: .' In 47 B.C., Julius Caesar's troops destroyed the library at Alexandria. To replace the lost books, Marc Antony confiscated the entire library of Pergamum:  and moved it to Egypt.
