Istanbul in the Snow

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences, Universityof Wisconsin - Green Bay

winter ViewsMy parents pictured Turkey as desert before I went there and were astonished when my pictures showed trees, grass, and people wearing European styles.

In fact, Turkey is at the same latitude, and has a similar climate as New York. The winter I was there was unusually cold and a rare heavy snowfall blanketed Istanbul. Left and below are views of the Bosporus.

winter ViewsIronically, that winter Germany was having unusually mild weather. I sent my slide of Saint Sophia to Stars and Stripes along with the message "After reading about the 'green winter' you folks are having in Germany, I thought you might like to see what things are like down here in sunny Turkey."
