We had two choices to get out. One was to retrace our steps: four miles and a1500-foot climb. The other was to go up the rim, two miles and a 1000 footclimb. In a lucid moment (I had one as recently as 1988) I should have taken thelong slow way. But I don't regret doing it this way.

Looking up at the rim. The way out was up the talus and via the light spot rimmed by trees in the upper right. It's steeper than it looks. |

The tricky part. This slickrock is just a bit too steep to climb directly. The folks in the trees pioneered a route that wasn't overly dangerous. |

Thomas Kenkmann is looking for an errant camera. He found it. See below. |

Thomas is coming up the most difficult stretch. Hans (foreground) suggested I sit on the rock and push against the dipping ledge with my feet. It worked fine. |

Why You Shouldn't Drop Cameras Off Cliffs sounds more like the title of a Monty Python sketch, but Graham's camera didn't fare too well in its 100-foot tumble. |
