Gneiss, Scotland

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Wisconsin - Green Bay

This intricately folded gneiss is in the Highlands of Scotland. Despite the complexity, the overall shape of the fold is a syncline, a fold that bows downward. The bottom illustration shows two layers colored to make the structure clearer.
