Yosemite Valley, California During Retreat of the Glaciers

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Wisconsin - Green Bay

As the ice retreated up Yosemite Valley, a lake formed between the glacier and its end moraine. San and silt were deposited on the lake bottom to a depth of a couple of hundred feet, giving the valley a square bottom instead of the rounded U shape typical of most glacial valleys.
